What is your spinal cord protected by?
The spinal cord is protected by several structures, including:
- The vertebral column: The vertebral column is a series of 33 bones that form the backbone. These bones enclose and protect the spinal cord.
- The intervertebral discs: These are discs of cartilage that sit between the vertebrae. They help to cushion the spinal cord and provide support.
- The meninges: These are three layers of tissue that surround the spinal cord. The outer layer is called the dura mater, the middle layer is called the arachnoid mater, and the inner layer is called the pia mater. These layers help to protect the spinal cord from injury and infection.
- The cerebrospinal fluid: This fluid fills the spaces between the meninges and helps to cushion the spinal cord.
