What is the procedure for CPR?
1. Check for Responsiveness:
- Gently shake or tap the person and call out loud, "Are you okay?"
- If there's no response and they are not breathing or only gasping, proceed with CPR.
2. Call For Help:
- If you're alone, call 911 or your local emergency number before beginning CPR.
- If there are others present, ask someone to call for professional assistance while you start CPR.
3. Position the Person:
- Gently lay the person on their back on a firm, flat surface.
4. Open Airway with the Head-Tilt/Chin-Lift:
- Place one hand on the forehead and the other hand under the chin.
- Gently tilt their head back and lift their chin to open the airway.
5. Check For Breathing:
- Look, listen, and feel for normal breathing for no more than 10 seconds.
- If the person is not breathing or is only gasping, administer rescue breaths.
6. Administer Rescue Breaths:
- Perform two rescue breaths:
- Pinch their nose shut and cover their mouth completely with yours.
- Give a slow, steady breath that causes the chest to rise. Avoid overfilling their lungs.
7. Start Chest Compressions:
- Kneel beside the person's chest with straight arms and your shoulders directly over your hands.
- Place the heel of one hand on the center of their chest, between the nipples.
- Place your other hand over the first hand and interlock your fingers.
- Give chest compressions at a rate of about 100-120 compressions per minute.
- Push hard and fast, about 3.8-5 centimeters (1.5-2 inches) deep, allowing the chest to come back up between compressions.
8. Continue Cycles of Compressions and Breaths:
- Continue performing cycles of 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths.
- Continue this cycle until help arrives or the person starts breathing again.
9. Use an AED (If Available):
- If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available, switch it on and follow the voice prompts.
- Attach the AED pads to the person's chest as directed by the device.
10. Continue Until Help Arrives:
- Continue performing CPR until emergency medical personnel arrive and take over.
11. Stay Calm and Seek Medical Attention:
- Even if the person regains consciousness, it's important to stay calm and seek immediate medical attention.
Remember, proper training in CPR is crucial to ensure you're performing the technique correctly. Stay updated with CPR certification to be prepared in case of emergency.
