What is chest rise in CPR?

Chest rise in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) refers to the visible movement of the chest upwards during effective chest compressions. It is an essential component of CPR as it indicates that the chest is being compressed to the recommended depth and that blood is being circulated throughout the body.

Steps to achieve proper chest rise during CPR:

1. Positioning: Place the person on their back on a firm surface and kneel next to them. Position yourself perpendicular to their chest.

2. Hand Placement: Place the heel of one hand on the center of the person's sternum (breastbone), between the nipples. Place your other hand on top of the first one and interlock your fingers.

3. Lock Elbows: Keep your arms straight and lock your elbows. Avoid bending your elbows during compressions.

4. Chest Compression Depth: Press down firmly and evenly using your upper body weight to compress the chest at least 2 inches (5 centimeters) but no more than 2.4 inches (6 centimeters) deep.

5. Rate of Compressions: Perform chest compressions at a steady rate of approximately 100-120 compressions per minute. You can use a metronome or a song with a similar beat to help maintain the correct rate.

6. Allow Complete Recoil: After each compression, release the pressure completely to allow the chest to return to its normal position. This helps in adequate blood filling of the heart chambers.

7. Continuous Compressions: Continue performing chest compressions without interruption until professional medical help arrives or the person starts showing signs of life, such as breathing, coughing, or movement.

Achieving proper chest rise during CPR ensures that the heart is effectively compressed, which helps circulate oxygenated blood to the brain and other vital organs, increasing the chances of survival.
