How do you use AED in CPR?

CPR with AED - Adult:

1. Call 911 or your local emergency number: Send someone to call or call yourself if alone and safe to do so.

2. Check the scene: Ensure it's safe to approach the person.

3. Check for responsiveness: Gently shake the person and shout, "Are you okay?" If unresponsive, the person needs CPR.

4. Start chest compressions: Place the person on their back, on a firm, flat surface. Kneel beside them and position the heel of one hand in the center of their chest, between the nipples. Place the second hand over the first, interlacing the fingers. Press hard (at least 2 inches or 5 cm) and fast (at least 100 compressions per minute). Count aloud and keep compressing.

5. Give rescue breaths (if trained and comfortable doing so): After 30 chest compressions, open their airway by tilting the head back and lifting the chin. Pinch their nose and seal your lips around their mouth. Give two rescue breaths, each lasting 1 second and allowing their chest to rise and fall.

6. Continue CPR: Resume chest compressions immediately and perform 30 compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths until the person starts breathing, an automated external defibrillator (AED) arrives, or professional medical help takes over.

7. Use AED if available: If an AED arrives, turn it on and follow its voice prompts.

8. Continue until help arrives: Keep performing chest compressions and rescue breaths until the person begins to breathe, an AED is used, or professional medical help arrives.
