How do you perfom CPR?

Performing effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can save lives during a cardiac emergency. Here's how to perform CPR on an adult according to the American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines:

1. Check Responsiveness:

- Gently shake and shout to the person, "Are you okay?"

- If they are unresponsive, call for help or ask someone else to call 911 (emergency services).

2. Start Chest Compressions:

- Position the person on a firm surface.

- Kneel beside them and place the heel of one hand on the center of their chest, between the nipples.

- Place your other hand over the first hand, interlacing your fingers and keeping your elbows straight.

- Position yourself with your shoulders directly over your hands and give chest compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.

- Push down 3.8 to 5 cm (1.5 to 2 inches) on the chest and allow it to recoil between compressions.

3. Give Rescue Breaths:

- After 30 chest compressions, open the person's airway by tilting their head back slightly and lifting their chin to clear any obstructions.

- Pinch their nose shut to create a seal.

- Cover their mouth with yours and give two rescue breaths, ensuring that their chest rises with each breath.

4. Continue Cycles of Compressions and Breaths:

- Continue alternating between 30 chest compressions and two rescue breaths in cycles until:

- Help arrives and takes over.

- The person shows signs of life, such as coughing, breathing, or movement.

- You are exhausted and cannot continue.

5. Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED):

- If an AED is available, turn it on and follow voice prompts.

- Attach electrode pads to the person's chest as instructed by the AED.

- The AED will analyze the person's heart rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electric shock.

Remember:

- Stay calm and act quickly.

- Ensure proper compression depth and rate.

- Allow complete chest recoil between compressions.

- Provide rescue breaths effectively to deliver oxygen.

- Continue CPR until professional medical help arrives.

- Get trained in CPR and AED usage for greater confidence and competence.
