What is hands only CPR?
Hands-only CPR (also known as compression-only CPR) is a method of resuscitation that uses chest compressions only, without rescue breaths. It is recommended for bystanders who are not trained in CPR or who are not comfortable giving rescue breaths. Hands-only CPR can be performed on adults, children, and infants.
To perform hands-only CPR:
1. Place the person on their back on a hard, flat surface.
2. Kneel beside the person's shoulders.
3. Place the heel of one hand on the person's sternum, between the nipples.
4. Place your other hand over your first hand, interlacing your fingers.
5. Give chest compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute.
6. Push down on the person's chest at least 2 inches (5 cm) but not more than 3.8 inches (7.5 cm).
7. Allow the chest to recoil completely between compressions.
8. Continue chest compressions until emergency medical help arrives.
Hands-only CPR is a simple and effective way to save a life. If you are not trained in CPR, or if you are not comfortable giving rescue breaths, hands-only CPR is the recommended way to help someone who is in cardiac arrest.
