When Should CPR Be Used?

CPR is an abbreviation for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This procedure, performed by creating artificial circulation and respiration, should be used in a variety of instances when a person stops breathing.
  1. Drowning

    • If a person's airway is filled with water as a result of nearly drowning, CPR should be used to get oxygen to the lungs.

    Drug Overdose

    • It is common for a person who overdoses on prescription or illicit drugs to stop breathing. If this occurs, CPR should be administered.

    Heart Attacks

    • If an individual's heart stops beating when he or she suffers a heart attack, CPR should be performed until professional medical assistance has arrived.

    Strokes

    • When strokes occur, blood flow to the brain strops. If a stroke victim stops breathing, CPR should be administered.

    Additional Instances

    • In any other circumstance when a person's breathing has stopped, CPR should be administered immediately.
