What Are the Conditions That Must Exist Before Performing CPR?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, CPR, is a technique that is used to save people's lives every day. When you are a bystander in an emergency, your level of knowledge and comfort level will determine exactly what you do. It is a good idea to get training on CPR. There are usually places in all cities that provide this invaluable training.
  1. Make the Decision to Help

    • Doing something may mean the difference between life and death. You should help when you see a person who is passed out, whether it is the result of an accident, heart attack, choking or drowning.

    Is the Person Responsive?

    • Check for responsiveness by shaking her shoulder and asking her if she is OK. If there is no response, she may be in danger.

    Call for Help

    • If there is another person on the scene, tell that person to call 911 immediately.

    Position the Head

    • Tilt the victim's head back. Do this by placing your hand on the bottom of his chin and pushing his head back gently, but quickly.

    Listen for Breathing

    • Listen closely to determine whether the victim is breathing. If she is not breathing, begin CPR.
