About CPR Training From the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross, founded in 1881, is one of the largest providers of CPR and other safety training courses. It is a worldwide organization that provides courses for the community on a regular basis. There are many occupations that require CPR certification in order to gain or maintain employment. Below are some basic facts about CPR training provided by the Red Cross.
  1. Identification

    • CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It is a technique that helps save someone who has stopped breathing and whose heart has stopped beating.

    Components

    • CPR training teaches you to first assess the situation and then act in an emergency. It is a combination of activating an emergency plan and then administering care.

    Rescue Breathing

    • With rescue breathing you essentially breathe for the victim. Only give rescue breaths if the person is not breathing at all.

    Chest Compressions

    • The Red Cross CPR training shows you how to give compressions to help stimulate the heart if it is not beating. Never give chest compressions to someone that has a pulse.

    Time Frame

    • Your Red Cross CPR certification is good for one year.

    Considerations

    • To administer CPR correctly, you need to take a course in person from a Red Cross certified instructor; online certification is not possible.
