How to Give an Infant CPR
When giving an infant CPR, first determine that the scene is safe and then do a preliminary check of the patient. In this scenario, emergency crews have been called, but the victim requires additional care.Things You'll Need
- Personal protective equipment
Instructions
-
Rescue Breathing (pulse, but no breathing)
-
1
Gently place one hand on the forehead and two fingers under the chin.
-
2
Tilt the infant's head back slightly to open the airway. You do not need to tilt too far, as young children's airways are smaller.
-
3
Place your mouth over the infant's nose and mouth, covering the entire area.
-
4
Give one breath every three seconds, blowing gentle puffs of air until the chest clearly rises.
-
5
Continue breathing for the infant until she becomes conscious, further help arrives, or you become too tired to continue.
CPR (no pulse, no breathing)
-
6
After you have looked, listened and felt for breathing, check for a pulse on the infant's brachial artery (upper arm). If there is no pulse, begin CPR.
-
7
Place one hand gently on the infant's forehead to tilt back the head.
-
8
Place two fingers on the center of the chest across the nipple line.
-
9
Compress down at a depth of 1/2 to 1 inch, using only your two fingers, 30 times.
-
10
Give the infant two breaths between compressions. The rate is 30 compressions to two breaths.
