How to Report a Missing Person in San Diego

Nearly one million people are reported missing each year. Few of those people disappear as a result of kidnapping by a stranger, but nonetheless, their disappearance is a upsetting for friends and loved ones. If someone you know in San Diego has gone missing, it is imperative to report it immediately. Early response helps mobilize law enforcement quickly and improves the chances of locating the missing individual.

Instructions

      Call 911 if you believe the situation is an emergency; in other words, if you think the missing person's life or health is in imminent danger.

      Call 619-531-2000 or 858-484-3154 for non-emergencies. Just because you're reporting the case as a non-emergency does not mean it will be disregarded.

      Appear at any San Diego police station and make a report.

      Include in your report any vital information that may help the police locate the individual, including a physical description, where you last saw him or her, what he was last wearing, places he or she is likely to go and close personal acquaintances of the missing individual. Provide a photograph, if possible.

      Report the missing person to the California Missing and Unidentified Persons Unit. You can call 1-800-222-FIND, 916-227-3290 or send an e-mail to [email protected]. Please note, however, that the police, not this office, will be performing the investigative work.
