How to Change a Name on a Driving License

Obtain a certified document stating your change of name. Acceptable documents include a marriage or divorce certificate or a court order. The document must show your previous name as well as your new name.

Gather together your current driver's license as well as an updated Social Security card. You can obtain a new Social Security card by contacting your local Social Security Office. See the "Resources" section below for a directory.

Go to your local Secretary of State's office, Department of Motor Vehicles, or Driver and Vehicle Service location. Depending on the state you live in, this can be a different location. See "References" below for a directory of locations.

Present your information to obtain a new Driver's License. You may be assessed a fee after which you will be issued a duplicate license with your new name. Your previous driver's license will not be returned.
