How to Repair a Pressure Governor on a Fire Pump

As portable firefighting systems, fire pumps provide fire fighters the ability to easily transport water to the scene of a fire. Typically classified as either forestry aids for use in wildfires or as additional support for firefighters, fire pumps require regular maintenance to ensure they are working properly. Along with the pump itself, a pressure governor is an essential element to a fire pump as it produces the high pressure necessary to propel water from the fire pump.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the fire pump's hub and pump casing. The pump wear rings are located between these two elements.

    • 2

Gently tap the pump around the casing and hub with a wrench to loosen the pieces.

    • 3

Find the pump wear ring. This seal fits between the low pressure intake and high pressure sections of the pump.

    • 4

Wipe down the pump wear ring with a clean cloth to remove any dirt or debris from the governor. Any buildup on the pump wear ring can alter how well the fire pump works.
