Instructions

    • 1

Conceal any valuable items. If you possess any items of great value (whether monetarily or personally), make sure they are not visible in plain sight to potential intruders. Consider placing a personal safe in the wall in a discreet spot such as behind a large framed poster, wardrobe or dresser, for example.

    • 2

Change your locks. When you move into a new home, the first thing you should do is change all of the locks to your doors, from the main entrance to the basement. This doesn't only apply to homes that have have previous residents, but also to brand new ones. Remember that many construction workers and Realtors have been on the premises before.

    • 3

Acquire a watch dog. If you are an animal lover, a guard dog can be a suitable addition to your home. Look for a dog breed that is known for its watch-dog capabilities and barking as a warning signal, such as Doberman Pinschers, American bulldogs, chow chows, German shepherds and boxers.

    • 4

Refrain from allowing unknown people into your home. If someone knocks on your door and requests to use your telephone for an emergency, do not let them inside. If you truly believe that the person needs help, simply contact the police for them instead.

    • 5

Keep your curtains drawn in the evenings and overnight. Avoid allowing strangers to get a peek inside of your home with your blinds and curtains open. Leaving blinds open enables people to see exactly what you have inside, whether it is a grand piano or an expensive credenza.

    • 6

Exercise caution when walking in public. Robberies don't only happen in homes -- criminals can easily rob your person out in public. Lower your chances of experiencing a robbery by being cautious when making ATM withdrawals, not making fancy jewelry obvious, being conscious of your environment, walking with other people (especially at night) and being discreet with your cash.

Install a security system. A burglar alarm can be an effective means for notifying you when someone attempts to gain access into your home without your permission. Through a variety of sensors, a security system can alert you to any potential unauthorized activity on your premises.
