5 Emergencies: Do You Know What to Do?

1. Fire

What to do:

- Stay calm and assess the situation.

- Call the fire department.

- If the fire is small and contained in a small space, try to put it out using a fire extinguisher.

- If the fire is spreading, evacuate the building immediately and do not stop to collect any belongings.

- Go to the nearest fire escape or designated meeting area and wait for the fire department to arrive.

2. Earthquake

What to do:

- Drop down to the floor in a covered area and hold onto a sturdy piece of furniture or structure.

- Stay indoors until the shaking stops.

- If you are outside, stay away from buildings, power lines, and other potential hazards.

- Check for injuries and call for medical assistance if necessary.

3. Tornado

What to do:

- Take shelter immediately in a basement or underground shelter.

- If there is no underground shelter available, go to the lowest level of the building and find an interior room without windows.

- Cover your body with blankets or pillows to protect yourself from flying debris.

- Stay away from windows and doors.

4. Hurricane

What to do:

- Stay informed about the hurricane's path and intensity by listening to the radio, watching the news, or checking online.

- Evacuate if ordered to do so by local authorities.

- If you cannot evacuate, stay indoors and away from windows.

- Secure your home by boarding up windows and doors.

- Stockpile food, water, and essential supplies.

5. Flood

What to do:

- Go to higher ground immediately.

- Do not drive through flooded roads.

- Turn off electricity and gas.

- Secure your property by moving valuables to higher ground.

- Be prepared to evacuate if necessary.
