What should you do immediately after the AED delivers a shock?
Immediately after the AED delivers a shock, you should:
1. Check for responsiveness:
- Gently shake and shout to the person, "Are you okay?"
- If they do not respond and are not moving or breathing normally, continue CPR.
2. Restart CPR:
- If the person remains unresponsive, immediately begin CPR.
- Continue chest compressions and rescue breaths for at least 2 minutes (5 cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths) before reattaching the AED pads.
3. Continue using the AED:
- After completing CPR, reattach the AED if available.
- Follow the voice prompts of the AED and allow it to analyze the heart rhythm again.
- If the AED advises another shock, deliver the shock as instructed by the AED.
4. Continue CPR and AED cycles:
- Alternate between 2 minutes of CPR (5 cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths) and AED analysis until:
- The person starts breathing and has a pulse,
- An advanced medical team takes over,
- You are too exhausted to continue, or
- 10 minutes have elapsed without any signs of life.
Remember, prompt action and proper technique during CPR and AED use increase the chances of a successful resuscitation.
