When checking responiveness for a unresponsive victim what would you do?
When checking responsiveness for an unresponsive victim, follow these steps:
1. Shake and Shout: Gently shake and shout to the person, "Are you okay?" or "Wake up!"
2. Check Breathing: Look, listen, and feel for normal breathing for no more than 10 seconds. Look for chest movement, listen for sounds of breathing, and feel for breath on your cheek.
3. Tap and Shout: If the person is not breathing normally, tap their shoulder firmly and shout, "Help! Call 911!" (or your local emergency number).
4. Begin CPR: If the person is not breathing or is only gasping, begin CPR immediately. Start with chest compressions:
- Place the heel of one hand on the center of the person's chest, between the nipples.
- Place your other hand over the first hand, interlacing your fingers.
- Press hard and fast at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute, allowing the chest to fully recoil between compressions.
- Give 30 compressions, then provide 2 rescue breaths if you are trained in CPR.
- Continue CPR until the person starts breathing normally, help arrives, or you are too exhausted to continue.
