Disaster Recovery Plan Checklist

Disaster, whether manmade or natural, can cause disarray in the life of the most prepared individual. One of the best things you can do after a disaster strikes is to stay calm. Remaining calm will allow you to think clearly enough to proceed with what you need to do to move forward. Here is a list of some things that are wise to do after disaster strikes.
  1. Check for Injuries

    • Is everyone OK?

Call out and physically check to see if the ones nearest you are all right. One who is in shock may not feel or know that he is injured. If there are any injuries, administer immediate first aid and call or wait for help. If there is a designated disaster recovery site, transport the individual if he can be transported and if the conditions are safe.

    Listen for Further Instruction

    • The radio is a useful tool during disasters.

Listen to the radio to receive further instruction from local authorities. Before and after disasters, radios or television are used to relay important information to the public affected.

Avoid Turning on Electrical Switches or Appliances

    • Stay away from that electrical switch after a disaster strikes.

Disasters can damage electrical wiring and gas lines, so avoid using electrical switches and appliances or lighting matches. Damaged wiring can cause fires or explosions if there is a gas leak.

    Locate Your Emergency Preparedness Kit

    • Your backpack can be used to hold emergency supplies.

If you have an emergency kit, now is the time to locate it. Grab it and have it near you so that you can be ready to go should you have to. In your kit you should have basic essentials such as food, water, spare clothes and important documents. If you don't have a kit, do not spend time in unsafe conditions to make one.
