Survivalist Checklist

Survival situations can happen at anytime due to severe weather, outdoor accidents or an entire spectrum of natural or manmade disasters. These situation might push a human to his limits, and test his survival skills and will to live. Being properly prepared -- and possessing the necessary skills -- might help keep you alive until you're rescued or reach help.
  1. Shelter

    • Shelter is a basic survival need that keeps you safe from the elements. A house, apartment, car, cave or workplace provides shelter in the event of natural disasters or other emergencies. A tent or tarp provides shelter if you are in the wild and away from traditional structures.

    Fire

    • A means of starting a fire should be included in all survival kits. Fire allows you to keep warm, cook food and create a signal for help. A disposable lighter, waterproof matches and flint or magnesium striker are acceptable fire starters.

    Water

    • Water is the body's most basic need. It is essential you obtain clean drinking water when in a survival scenario. Bottled water is a possible solution at home or work; it has durable packaging and a long shelf life. A manually operated water-purification pump -- or purification tablets -- are compact. These items are easily stored in a vehicle or pack.

    Food

    • Food keeps the body strong. Consuming the proper foods strengthens your immune system and fights off potential illness. Food items with a long shelf life -- sealed in durable packaging -- are ideal candidates for survival food. Canned goods, freeze-dried meals, dried fruits, jerky and military meals provide the necessary nutrition. These foods are easily carried in a backpack or stored in your home.

    First Aid

    • A first-aid kit is an essential item for a survivalist, in that it allows you to treat injuries until help can be reached. A basic first-aid kit takes up little space, and can treat a host of medical conditions. Include items such as bandages, gauze, medical tape, pain relievers, allergy medicine, antibiotic cream, alcohol swabs, pieces of fabric and a length of heavy string or rope. Keep extra prescriptions on hand.
