How to Call for Help in an Emergency

While calling for help in an emergency seems as easy as picking up the phone and calling 911, panic can cause you to temporarily forget the basics of requesting prompt medical attention. Whether you're injured or calling for help for someone, it is essential to remain as calm as possible to reduce the risk of further injuring yourself or others or worsening the situation due to reckless decisions resulting from anxiety.

Instructions

    • 1

Take slow, deep breaths to reduce anxiety, and dial 9-1-1. If the emergency situation is a fire or an immediate threat to your safety, remove yourself from the situation and wait outside while calling for help.

    • 2

Explain the emergency situation to the operator. Say your name, address and what happened that requires immediate medical attention. Speak in a clear, even-paced tone to ensure the operator understands what you're saying. While this is easier said than done, rapid speech delays the operator's ability to dispatch help.

    • 3

Listen closely to the operator, and answer all questions to ensure the appropriate emergency help is given. Stay on the phone while speaking to the operator, as the operator may give instructions on how to help the injured person or what to do next in a life-threatening situation.
