Solutions for Floods
Floods can occur anywhere it can rain, according to the National Flood Insurance Program. Although the risk of floods varies with the terrain, location and climate, individual flood preparation is every person's responsibility. Some of the actions require community wide involvement, while others occur at the individual or family level. Each precaution makes the individual and community safer.-
Community Planning
-
Community planners can prohibit construction in flood-prone areas or require special construction provisions. These provisions could include requiring the builder to construct the lowest level of the home above the flood plain or requiring that the landscaping include permanent dikes or berm to prevent water reaching the home site. Communities can also include permanent dikes in green spaces or parks along streams to prevent water from infiltrating the inhabited community.
Building Plans
-
Homes built in flood-prone areas should include some basic common sense features. Homes that may flood should include elevated furnaces or other appliances normally installed in the basement. The plans should also include placing the electrical access panel in an area well above any potential flood water. Place all electrical outlets and fixtures at least 1 foot above the maximum flood level.
Building Preparation
-
Move furniture or other valuables from the lower levels upon issuance of a flood warning or watch. If possible, install a battery or gasoline powered sump pump in the basement. Plug all floor or sewer drains at any level below the anticipated high water level. Turn off utilities to the home if water inundates it.
Personal Preparation
-
Prepare an emergency kit including fresh water, preserved or canned food and first aid kits. This kit should also include a battery operated radio to monitor any emergency messages. Many homeowners also prepare a financial emergency kit with copies of important documents, drivers license and medical insurance records, along with a credit or debit card and some cash. After completing all the emergency kits the family should review the locations of the kits and the evacuation plans that may be necessary. Select a safe house with a family or friend who lives outside the flood area; if you have children, this house should be in an area that allows children access to their school. Make plans for the housing of any pets during the emergency.
