How to Evacuate High-Rise Buildings

High-rise buildings are different from homes or small office spaces during times of an emergency evacuation. If there is a fire, bomb threat or other emergency situation that occurs at a high-rise building during work hours, it is important that everyone there knows and is familiar with the evacuation plan to be followed in that building. There are several suggestions, however, that you should follow no matter what high-rise building you may be in, as these are universal suggestions that work in every situation, even if you are not familiar with the building's evacuation plan.

Instructions

    • 1

Familiarize yourself with the building's evacuation plan. OSHA has certain requirements for each place that employs individuals to provide and post evacuation plans in case of emergencies.

    • 2

Take note of the exit locations before an emergency occurs, if possible. These can be found with lighted exit signs.

    • 3

Avoid elevators. In the event of an emergency in a high-rise building, do not descend using the elevators because of the danger of a power outage. Always use the stairs to exit a high-rise building.

    • 4

Get far enough away from the building after you exit to ensure your safety. Do not call police or firefighters until you are safely outside the building.
