How to Create Your Own Medical Bracelet

Medical bracelets allow individuals to alert emergency medical providers of preexisting medical conditions while they are unconscious and in need of care. Individuals with conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes or Alzheimer's disease are ideal candidates for wearing a medical bracelet that lists their condition. Children with medical issues can also benefit from personalized medical bracelets as they are often unable to communicate health conditions to emergency responders. In today's marketplace, hundreds of styles of medical bracelets are available, but creating your own bracelet allows for the expression of personal style while staying safe.

Visit a local engraving shop or work through an online retailer to purchase a personalized, engraved medical tag. Select a tag that matches your personal style with an anchor point on both sides to secure it to the bracelet. Specify what information should be engraved on the tag. Basic information may include the wearer's name, medical conditions or allergies. A metal engraved tag is recommended for medical bracelets to ensure that the information remains legible throughout long-term wear.

Cut a length of elastic beading string to fit the wearer's wrist. Wrap the string around the wrist snugly to measure the proper length, leaving approximately 1 inch of extra string to tie on the medical alert tag.

Place one end of the elastic string through one of the holes in the engraved medical alert tag. Secure the string in place by tying it off with a basic knot. Slide the beads of your choosing onto the string in a patterned design, one at a time, using the alert tag as a stopper,

Secure the loose end of the elastic string to the opposite side of the medical tag by looping the string through the anchor hole and trying a knot. The medical alert symbol of the identification tag should be facing outward when the bracelet is worn on the wrist. Try the competed bracelet on for size and carefully cut off any tail left by tying the securing knots.
