Server Room Alarm Standards

Standards governing alarms in server rooms are developed and published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Standards are available for purchase online.
  1. NFPA Standards

    • The NFPA has produced a number of standards governing server room alarm standards. These include NFPA 75 -- Standard for Protection of Computer and Data Processing Equipment, NFPA 72 -- National Fire Alarm Code and NFPA 76 - Standard for the Fire Protection of Telecommunications Facilities.

    Alarms

    • It is recommended alarms be equipped with signaling and notification devices. They should be audible and visible, and capable of alerting personnel that a fire has been discovered. They should also be equipped with control systems which contain characteristics such as time delays, passwords and thresholds.

    • NFPA standards may be purchased from the NFPA website. As of 2010, for non-members the purchase price was $79. For members, the price is $71.10. Standards may be purchased in the form of a book or downloadable file.
