How to Use a Steel Baton
A steel baton can be a valuable asset in a self-defense situation. After years of use in law enforcement, steel batons recently have become popular as civilian self-defense devices. Steel batons, also known as expandable or telescoping batons, are small and easy to conceal when collapsed. With a flick of the wrist, the 8-inch baton expands to a threatening length of 16, 21 or 28 inches. In an emergency situation, carrying a steel baton and knowing how to use it properly can mean the difference between an attack and a close scare.Instructions

1
Grip the collapsed steel baton with the expanding side facing away from you.
-
2
Flick your wrist to expand the baton. This is done most easily by jerking your hand upward slightly and rapidly back down to propel the collapsed sections of the baton outward.
-
3
Defend yourself. In showing your attacker that you have a weapon and are willing to fight back, you're increasing the likelihood that the attacker will decide that you're not easy prey after all. Try not to engage in combat; instead, make eye contact and back up slowly.

Aim for a vulnerable spot on your attacker if you have to physically defend yourself against the attacker. Vulnerable spots include the neck, face, groin, knees and feet. Give the attacker a few good whacks with the steel baton to these areas to incapacitate him.
