Evacuation Guidelines
Emergencies occur that require immediate action, and sometimes they call for evacuation. In some cases there may be advance warning, but there are ways to be prepared for unexpected situations, too.-
Supplies
-
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends maintaining a basic disaster supplies kit including first aid supplies, water, food, clothing, bedding, sanitation necessities, and tools. Other important necessities are medications, baby formula, diapers, family documents, and cash. Keep these items in a container that is easy to take with you.
Preparation
-
Keep your car filled with gas if an evacuation is anticipated. If there is enough time, wear appropriate clothing that includes sturdy shoes and garments that offer protection from the elements.
Secure Property
-
Before vacating your home you should unplug all electrical equipment and small appliances if time allows. Secure all windows and doors.
Instructions
-
FEMA notes that you should follow evacuation instructions provided by your area's law enforcement or governing agency and adhere to recommended evacuation routes. Never drive into a flooded area and watch for washed-out roads and bridges, as well as downed power lines.
Organizations
-
Schools, organizations and institutions usually have their own specific written evacuation guidelines. They typically include directives regarding building and walkway clearances, assisting individuals who are physically disabled, and not using elevators.
