TDH & Fire Extinguisher Requirements

Fire safety is a high priority for the Texas Department of Health (TDH). There are specific rules and regulations governing fire prevention, including strict requirements related to compliance, responsiveness, and the use and maintenance of fire extinguishers.
  1. TDH Fire Extinguishing System Requirements

    • The Texas Administrative Code states that all water-based and portable fire extinguishers must comply with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. Part of this compliance involves regular inspections, maintenance and testing of all fire extinguishers. The fire extinguishers must also be properly installed and tagged. It is important for you to perform similar maintenance and inspection of your own fire extinguishers at home to ensure your family's safety.

TDH Fire Protection and Evacuation Planning Requirements

    • The Texas Administrative Code requires public entities, like an ASC, to post evacuation floor plans. Part of the evacuation planning involves annual trainings on each individual's responsibilities during an evacuation. All individuals should be aware of the locations of fire prevention equipment and such equipment should be accessible within 75 feet of any given location in the building.

TDH Fire Training and Drill Requirements

    • Practice is a key element in the execution of fire safety at home and in public venues. The Texas Administrative Code requires a fire alarm system to be in place, regularly maintained and tested to communicate any fire hazards. The alarm system should signal not only the immediate area within the building, but also connect automatically to the fire department for instant response. Fire drills in accordance with NFPA requirements should be performed at least quarterly to simulate an emergency evacuation plan.
