Advantages & Disadvantages of Stun Guns

Although crime remains a persistent concern, not everyone feels comfortable carrying a handgun. Stun guns, or Tasers, are safer alternatives to firearms and knives.
  1. Using a Stun Gun

    • Using a stun gun for the first time in an emergency can be dangerous. The best thing to do is to test the Taser and be able to use it before it is actually needed.

To test the stun gun, hold the safety zone plate near the switch. When the switch is pressed, a charge will fire across the front of the gun between the test probes. It will only fire as long as the switch is pressed. The longer it is pressed, the quicker the battery drains.

In order to discharge the stun gun, after testing, touch the probes against a piece of metal. Once the final spark emits, it is safe. If the unit is not discharged, and the probes are touched within five minutes, you may receive a shock.

    Advantages

    • There are plenty of advantages to having a stun gun. Anyone can own a stun gun since they are a non-lethal alternative to other weapons. Although they do not cause much permanent harm, they shock the attacker's nervous system by emitting a high-voltage, low-amperage charge. By disabling the attacker temporarily, stun guns allow victims the opportunity to flee before the attacker can cause any harm. Unlike pepper spray, which has to be sprayed in either the eyes or mouth, stun guns can be used on any body part.

Stun guns are easy to carry and maintain. They can be used multiple times before a recharge is needed, and they run on standard alkaline or lithium batteries.

    Disadvantages

    • While there are many advantages to owning a stun gun, there are also disadvantages. For those unsure of how to use Tasers, the first time can be dangerous if used improperly. Therefore, Tasers should always be used with care and caution.

Although the main purpose of stun guns is for protection, stun guns may also be used in crime. Like guns and other types of weapons, the nature of stun guns can also be misconstrued for harm.

Another disadvantage of stun guns is that they must be used at very close range, which can be dangerous in a case that the other person has a gun.
