ADA Fire Extinguisher Cabinet Mounting Height

The Americans With Disabilities Act has specific guidelines for the height of any objects hung on walls in public and commercial facilities, as well as how far they can project out from the wall.
  1. Front Approach Mounting Height

    • If the cabinet is unobstructed and can be accessed from the front, the maximum forward reach height (the height of the top handle of the extinguisher) is 48 inches above the floor.

    Side Approach Mounting Height

    • If it is possible to access the extinguisher from the side, the maximum forward reach height is 54 inches above the floor.

    Wall Projection

    • If the leading edge of the object is anywhere from 27 inches to 80 inches above the floor, it can protrude from the wall no more than four inches. Anything under 27 inches can protrude as much as is necessary.
