Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a system that responds to a call for help during an illness or injury to provide medical care. Each state and territory has a lead EMS agency made up of private and public organizations that include EMS workers, doctors, nurses, therapists, trauma centers, hospitals, transportation and communication networks. The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians and EMS Magazine recognize paid and volunteer EMS professionals and agencies each year at the National EMS Awards of Excellence.

Charleston County EMS

• Charleston County EMS in South Carolina received the 2010 national award presented to EMS agencies that exceed expectations. CCEMS provides several programs to prevent injury, improve response and provide progressive patient care including a back injury prevention program and a cardiac care program. The winners of the 2008 national award for top EMS agency, LCEMS is a leader in preparing for regional disaster and works closely with hospitals to improve patient care. Medical protocols are continuously updated, and LCEMS is very involved in the community, providing bicycle helmets to children and offering CPR and AED training.
