What Is in Winter Survival Kits?
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends early winter preparedness to combat winter weather. Winter home and car survival kits can protect you and your family during a winter storm.-
Home Survival Kits
-
Winter home survival kits should include nonperishable food items such as canned goods, dried fruits and crackers. Keep at least five gallons of water per person in the event water pipes break or freeze. Maintain a supply of medications that your family may need in case you cannot make it to the pharmacy.
Car Survival Kits
-
Essential items in car survival kit include blankets, a first aid kit, a fully charged cell phone, water, flashlight and extra batteries, nonperishable foods and booster cables. A bag of kitty litter or sand increases traction on snow or ice. A bright colored cloth tied on the antennae in a snowstorm provides a beacon for rescuers. Keep a winter hat, scarf, and an extra set of gloves and clothing in your car.
Warnings
-
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) suggests paying attention to shivering as it is a sign of hypothermia. Infants and elderly adults lose heat faster and produce heat slower than other adults produce. Ensure they are properly covered. If stranded in your car, stay inside the vehicle to avoid accidents caused by poor visibility.
