1
Make a list of all hand tools that you routinely use and have access to. Include items such as pick-head axes, flat-head axes, bolt cutters, claw tools, pry bars, Kelly tools, sledgehammers, Halligan tools, hooks, knives, rams and other cutters.
-
2
Choose which tools can be placed in a tool box or placed on a tool belt. Organize tools based on where they can be stored and how they can be properly transported. Place all tools in the appropriate location. Make sure that tool boxes are securely fastened and closed tightly.
-
3
Store hand tools out of the reach of anyone, especially children, not trained in using them properly. Take all hand tools out of your personal vehicle or remove your tool belt when you are done working or attending a fire.
-
4
Learn the proper hand tool usage policies and procedures. Verify rules and regulations regarding when you can and cannot carry fire service hand tools. For example, if your fire department or commanding officer requires all tools be kept on a fire truck or service vehicle, do not remove the tools from those designated areas.
-
5
Carry hand tools in a safe manner when moving them from their storage location to the site where they are to be used. Keep sharp ends pointed down and pay attention to others near you to avoid accidents.
