Two General Types of Radiation Detection Devices

Radiation detection devices are used to measure levels of radiation. Too much radiation can be extremely harmful to humans, so if you suspect there is a high amount of radiation in a concentrated area, these devices will be able to corroborate this. Radiation can be transmitted through waves or particles ,and not every detection device is capable of recognizing both. To accurately determine whether or not an area is radiation free, the utilization of multiple detection devices will be necessary.
  1. Geiger Counter

    • The Geiger counter is a simple device used to detect particles of radiation, usually beta particles and gamma rays. There are two main components of the device. The first is a Geiger Mueller tube, which detects the radiation. The second is a speaker that translates the detected information from the Geiger Mueller tube into a succession of audible clicks that alert the user to the presence of radiation. The more radiation in a given area, the faster the device clicks. A Geiger Mueller tube is so sensitive that it can detect a single particle of radiation.

    Alpha Scintillation Detector

    • Alpha scintillation detectors are used to detect the presence of alpha particles. The scintillator is a luminescent surface that absorbs energy from these particles. This energy is then translated into light, which is then translated into an electronic pulse. This alerts the user to the presence of alpha particles.

    Other Types of Detection Devices

    • Other devices that may be helpful in the detection of radiation are the dose rate meter and a newly developed device called a gamma ray spectrometer.
