State Requirements for AED

The automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable computer that monitors the heart of a person who might be suffering from a heart attack. The automated external defibrillator checks the heart rhythm to make sure it's beating properly and, if not, then a voice on the device tells the person operating the device to administer a shock to the heart. All 50 states in the United States have laws requiring the use of the automated external defibrillator in schools, office buildings and dentist offices.
  1. Washington state dentists AED requirements

    • Beginning in March of 2009, all dentists in the state of Washington must have an automated external defibrillator in their office. The requirement is really for dentists who give patients anesthesia during a procedure. All staff that works in the dentist office have to been trained in giving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if or when a patient needs it. Along with cardiopulmonary resuscitation training, they also have to be trained on how to use the automated external defibrillator. The appropriate training courses must be approved by the Washington Department of Health.

    Texas schools AED requirements

    • The state of Texas requires that all school districts have an automated external defibrillator on their school campus. The schools include charter and private schools. Schools that purchase the automated external defibrillator from a grant program can be reimbursed for purchasing it. The automated external defibrillator has to be available during any sporting events and practices on school grounds. Only certain workers at the school are allowed to get training and maintain their certification for using the automated external defibrillator. This is the required staff, school nurse, assistant school nurse, marching band director, cheerleading coach, student athletic trainers, athletic coach or sponsor and physical education instructors. The staff also needs to know how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

    California health clubs AED requirements

    • California law defines health clubs as a place where people go to use equipment for physical exercise to build muscle, lose weight and get fitness training. All health clubs operating in California must have an automated external defibrillator in their club. Persons working at the club must take a four-hour training class in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and know how to use the automated external defibrillator. Part of the cardiopulmonary resuscitation training health club employees learn is how to determine when and if the person needs cardiopulmonary resuscitation and to use the automated external defibrillator with the right protocol. The state law states that for every automated external defibrillator the health clubs have, there must be one person who knows how to use it. For example, if the health club has five automated external defibrillators, so there should be five health club employees trained using the device.
