1
Enter the scene carefully, keeping in mind that the perpetrator could still be inside the dwelling. Search every room and enclosure in the house for the suspect and any victims.
-
2
Tape off the entrances to the dwelling using crime scene tape and escort any victims or onlookers to the outside of the dwelling.
-
3
Look for any footprints, beginning at the entryway and following the perpetrator's path. Pay close attention for any hair, fibers, footprints, blood and fingerprints, and gather anything that you find immediately. Place all evidence into separate plastic bags and envelopes.
-
4
Walk the victims through the house one by one, asking them to point out anything that is missing or has been disturbed. Remind the victims not to touch anything during the search.
