Fire Sprinkler Inspection Requirements
When a fire breaks out in a building, a sprinkler system can sometimes put it out or buy precious minutes for people to escape. These systems must be inspected to ensure they are in proper working order. The National Fire Protection Association, or NFPA, has researched and developed guidelines for the inspection of sprinkler systems.-
Who Performs Tests?
-
Certified and trained representatives of a company that specializes in fire sprinklers perform the inspections of fire sprinkler systems. In addition, the local fire marshal and the local fire chief are also capable of inspecting a sprinkler system.
What Tests Are Performed During Inspection?
-
A hydrostatic system test is performed to test the pressure in the sprinkler pipes. A systems operational test is performed to ensure that all alarms and system components are in working order. An air pressure test is performed on the pipes to check for possible leaks or breaks in the lines.
Additional Inspection Items
-
In addition to the performance tests, the various parts of the sprinkler system are checked for proper connections and for any repairs needed. The inspector looks at the actual sprinkler heads to be sure they are free from obstruction and debris.
How Often Is an Inspection Performed?
-
Most sprinkler systems are inspected quarterly, or every three months, in licensed facilities. A sprinkler system inspection report is provided for the building's records.
