Basics of Fire Extinguisher Training
-
PASS is an acronym used to remember the steps of using a fire extinguisher. They stand for Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Spray. In other words, pull the pin or safety tag out of the handle, aim the nozzle of the extinguisher towards the base of the fire, squeeze the handle to release the contents and spray the base of the fire in a sideways, back and forth motion until the flames are extinguished or the contents run out.
In-Person Training
-
Local fire departments or public safety centers often hold free, or nominal charge, fire extinguisher training courses. These classes are led by firefighters or certified instructors and allow students to practice with real extinguishers in order to get real-life experience.
For information on classes in your area, contact your local fire department or public safety center or keep your eyes open for notices posted around town or in your local newspaper.
Online Training
-
Sometimes companies or private individuals offer fire extinguisher training online. These can include video, audio or text-based instructions.
The upside of this type of training is that it can be done in your home at any time, anywhere and in any type of weather. The downside, is that you will not get real-life hands-on-training using actual extinguishers. They may also charge a fee for the convenience of taking a course online.
