The ability to use a fire extinguisher in an emergency situation is a life skill that anyone over the age of 10 can learn. Knowing the basics of extinguisher use, where to find information and training centers, and when to use an extinguisher are all vital pieces of information.

  1. Basics of Fire Extinguisher Training

    • PASS is an acronym used to remember the steps of using a fire extinguisher. They stand for Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Spray. In other words, pull the pin or safety tag out of the handle, aim the nozzle of the extinguisher towards the base of the fire, squeeze the handle to release the contents and spray the base of the fire in a sideways, back and forth motion until the flames are extinguished or the contents run out.

    In-Person Training

      Local fire departments or public safety centers often hold free, or nominal charge, fire extinguisher training courses. These classes are led by firefighters or certified instructors and allow students to practice with real extinguishers in order to get real-life experience.

    Online Training

      Sometimes companies or private individuals offer fire extinguisher training online. These can include video, audio or text-based instructions.

      The upside of this type of training is that it can be done in your home at any time, anywhere and in any type of weather. The downside, is that you will not get real-life hands-on-training using actual extinguishers. They may also charge a fee for the convenience of taking a course online.

    Significance

    • Being properly trained to use a fire extinguisher will increase the odds of survival for both yourself and your property in the case of a fire.

    Warning

    • Just having an extinguisher in the workplace or home without knowing how to use it is not a smart idea. With so many free or inexpensive ways to learn how to use a fire extinguisher, you will increase your chances of success in a fire emergency.
