Fire Station Grants

You can never be too prepared . . . and that's why firefighters and other first responders should take notice of the millions of dollars the government has made available to emergency management and homeland security agencies. According to Jamie Thompson, editor for FireRescue1.com, "the [stimulus] package includes $210 million for modifying, upgrading, or constructing fire stations."
  1. Fire Station Construction Grant Program (SCG)

    • The Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Fire Station Construction Grants (SCG) is a competitive grant that supports the building or modification of existing fire stations. These funds must be used to enhance response time and to protect the community from fire hazards.

    Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG)

    • The Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) helps firefighters and other first responders obtain equipment, emergency vehicles and protective clothing and uniforms. The funds can also be used for training and other administrative resources. The Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and U.S. Fire Administration provide funding for this grant. The grant can only be awarded to fire departments and nonaffiliated EMS organizations nationwide. Approximately 5,000 grants will be awarded.

    The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grants (SAFER)

    • The SAFER grant (see Resources) was created to help fire departments hire and train first responders and comply with staffing the standards established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

    Fire Prevention and Safety Grants (FP&S)

    • The Fire Prevention and Safety Grant is part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program, and provides funds to help enhance the safety of the public and firefighters. These grants can also be used for the construction of fire stations.

    Emergency Management Performance Grants (EMPG)

    • The Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG; see Resources) was created to help assist state and local governments sustain and improve all-hazards emergency management capabilities. This grant is open to all fifty states and six U.S. territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia). EMPG funds, which total 329.8 million dollars annually, are awarded on a population-share basis. According to FEMA.gov, "the State Administrative Agency (SAA) or the state's Emergency Management Agency (EMA) are eligible to apply directly to FEMA for EMPG funds on behalf of state and local emergency management agencies."
