Safety Procedures in Inclement Weather

Inclement weather doesn't have to present a danger to you or your family. Knowing what precautions to take can keep you safe when inclement weather looms.
  1. Dress Appropriately

    • Wear clothing appropriate to the situation. If the skies threaten rain, wear a rain slicker; if it's snow, wear a heavy winter coat. Don't tell yourself you'll only be a few minutes and don't need a coat, umbrella, etc. You can get delayed and put your safety at risk without the appropriate attire.

    Vehicle Upkeep

    • Check your windshield wipers to ensure they're in good condition. When they cannot clear the windshield of water in two swipes, it's time to replace them. Check your headlights. If there's a bulb out, replace it immediately. Check your tire pressure to ensure tires are fully inflated.

    Rain

    • When rain begins falling, turn on your headlights and reduce your speed. Drive with one car length between you and the car in front of you. If the rains become so heavy that you can't see well through the windshield or you feel you can't control the car well, pull over until the rain lets up.

    Wind, Tornado Threat

    • If there's a tornado warning or heavy winds and you're indoors, go to the lowest level of the building and stay away from windows. If you're stuck outside, it's recommended to seek refuge in a ditch or low-lying area or crouch near a strong building.

    Flood Potential

    • Avoid traveling through flooded areas. If there's water standing on the road, do not try to drive through it. Remember: Turn around, don't drown.

    Be Prepared

    • Keep an emergency kit in your car and at home. Keep them fully stocked. Check the expiration dates on the nonperishable food items periodically and replace any expired food.
