Responsibilities During Natural Disasters
Whether a natural disaster occurs, whether it's known about ahead of time (hurricanes, for example) or strikes suddenly (earthquakes or avalanches), knowing what to do is important.-
Plan Ahead
-
If you know a natural disaster is coming, take all necessary precautions to attempt to lessen the amount of damage and debris. This can include boarding up windows, tying down objects or bringing essential items down to the basement.
Stay Focused
-
Remember that the safety of people must come first. Think about neighbors who may need some extra help, such as those with disabilities or the elderly.
Stay Safe
-
Depending upon the disaster, do whatever it takes to stay safe. This can mean moving to higher ground, staying indoors at home or in a shelter, evacuating if advised to do so or simply getting underneath something sturdy.
Gather Essentials
-
Have a portable, battery-powered radio to find out what is going on and a first aid kit or disaster survival kit. Be sure to have your insurance information and other important documents together and with you.
Government Aid
-
When it is safe, the local government is responsible for sending out emergency services, along with volunteer organizations. The state government may send the National Guard and other agencies. Help may follow from the federal government (FEMA) if a disaster is deemed major.
