Lab Safety of Caustic Substances

Lab safety when working with caustic substances requires alertness and should be carried out with a high degree of safety. The use of appropriate equipment requires personal safety and responsibility of the lab worker to prevent injuries and accidents.
  1. Protective Gear

    • Use safety glasses or protective goggles to protect eyes from a potential explosion and splatters, a lab coat to protect clothing, and skin and protective gloves for the hands.

    Fume Hood

    • Use a fume hood involving all operations that include poisons or gases that are highly flammable or explosive.

    Lab Partner

    • Working with a partner provides safety and assistance in any potential emergency situation.

    Emergency Preparedness

    • Know the locations of fire extinguishers, fire blankets, safety showers, eye-wash stations and exits. Familiarize yourself with the use of and procedures of all emergency equipment.

    Waste Disposal

    • Know the correct way of disposal of chemicals and refuse that are part of or associated with the experiment. Placement of used chemicals in the appropriate container should be observed at all times.
