How to Use Artificial Respiration

Artificial respiration is creating a breathing mode in someone who is unable to in emergency situations. There are three methods of artificial respiration that can be used depending on what is available under the circumstances: rescue breathing, a handheld respirator or a respiration machine.

Instructions

  1. How to Use Artificial Respiration

    • 1

      Call 911.

    • 2

Kneel alongside the victim and see if he is conscious. Ask "Are you okay?"

    • 3

Determine if the victim is breathing or not. You can do this by first looking at his chest and then listening to his breath. If you don't see any sign of breathing after 10 seconds, you need to begin rescue breathing.

    • 4

Check the airway by tilting the head and looking down the throat for obstructions.

    • 5

Hold the victim's nose closed by pinching it with your fingers and lift his chin up, pushing his mouth open.

    • 6

Take a normal breath and blow into the victim's mouth over the course of a second. Do not try to force air in or breathe too much in. Look at his chest to see if it is rising.

      Repeat this step as necessary.

    • 7

Alternate artificial respiration with chest compressions until the victim starts to breathe on their own or help arrives. Chest compressions should be done with your hands clasped together pushing down between the breasts approximately 2 inches down. You should do 30 compressions for every two breaths.

    • 8

Place hand respirator over the nose and mouth when help arrives.

    • 9

Squeeze the bulb twice in a slow consistent fashion over the course of a second for each breath.

Repeat every 15 seconds in between compressions.
