What Is Needed in a 72-Hour Kit?

A 72-hour emergency kit is used in dealing with power outages caused by storms and other disasters. A modified portable kit can be designed for use in evacuations.
  1. Water

    • The portable kit should have at least enough drinking water for 3 days, with 3 gallons on hand for each person in the residence to allow for sponge bathing and teeth brushing.

    Food

    • Healthy food should be included, such as canned food and easily packed snacks such as granola bars and trail mix.

    First Aid

    • The 72-hour kit must include a basic first aid kit, which includes numerous items. See the References section for a link detailing those items.

    Clothing and Sleeping Items

    • Each person should have at least one change of clothing and a raincoat. Each person also should have a sleeping bag, blanket and camp pillow.

    Utilities

    • Suggested items include a mess kit, can opener, pocket knife, scissors, flashlight, battery-powered radio, battery-powered Coleman lantern, extra batteries, candles and matches.

    Personal Hygiene

    • Personal hygiene items should include a roll of toilet paper, shampoo, soap, any medication that might be needed, comb, toothbrush and toothpaste. Women should add feminine hygiene products.
