Instructions

    • 1

Discuss a disaster plan with your family. Ensure that every member of the family understands how to identify the warning signs, where to gather during and after a thunderstorm and whom to contact during emergency situations.

    • 2

Prepare a disaster kit and place it in an accessible place that is familiar to all the family members. Include bottled water, non-perishable food, first aid kit with nonprescription drugs, blankets, change of clothing, flashlights, radio, batteries, can openers, matches and some extra cash.

    • 3

Choose a relative or friend that lives outside your area or state to stay in contact with when your family members are separated.

    • 4

Secure loose objects outside the house such as furniture that can be blown away causing damage during a thunderstorm. Shutter and secure all windows and doors to prevent broken glass from heavy hail and wind.

    • 5

Unplug all electrical appliances and turn off the air conditioner and heater during the storm. Use only wireless phones and cell phones for emergencies to protect from power surges during lightening. Use battery powered radio to listen to weather reports.
