How many people die from water shortage?

Water scarcity and poor water quality were found to cause 1.4% of deaths globally every year, about 3.1 million fatalities — slightly over half of these were diarrheal-related and the rest, deaths from infections (such as dysentery) or chronic exposure to arsenic and fluorosis, according to a paper published in _PNAS_ (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), a peer-reviewed multidisciplinary scientific journal of the United States National Academy of Sciences.
