What Are the Benefits of Ozonation?

Ozonation, or ozone disinfection, is a water-treatment process used to destroy microorganisms through the use of ozone gases. The ozone gases are produced by subjecting oxygen molecules to a high electrical charge to disinfect the water. Despite its complexity and high cost, there are many benefits that derive from ozonation.
  1. Water Quality

    • Ozone disinfection improves the quality of water by destroying pathogens. It helps reduce many of the contaminants found in water that affects its taste, odor and color. Ozone disinfection doesn't lead to regrowth of microorganisms except for those protected by fine particles in wastewater.

    Environment

    • Ozone disinfection is ecological, as it contains fewer dangerous byproducts than chlorine. Also, there are no harmful residuals that must be removed after disinfection because the product decomposes quickly.

    Reduction in Byproducts

    • Ozone disinfection helps reduce the formation of chlorinated disinfection byproducts. These byproducts result from the interaction of chlorine with naturally occurring organic material in the water.

    Filtration

    • Ozone disinfection provides an additional barrier to protect the public from the spread of waterborne diseases to downstream users. Thus it provides a filter against common microorganisms located in domestic wastewater.
