How to Dispose of Silicon in Chemistry
The most commonly used forms of Silicon in chemistry are, fortunately, harmless. The rubber and silicon dioxide forms are not only classified as non-hazardous waste by the EPA, they are also common in everyday life. Rubber silicon is found in many common products around the house and is becoming commonplace. Disposal of silicon, therefore, follows the same steps as any other non-hazardous waste disposal.Instructions

1
Look up your state, local, and lab regulations regarding the disposal of non-hazardous waste. Depending on the lab you work in, they may prefer that silicon be disposed down the drain, in the trash, or in a container for recyclables.
-
2
If handling silicon dioxide avoid contact with skin, ingestion and inhalation while disposing in whatever manner lab protocol dictates. While not highly toxic, skin contact, inhalation and ingestion may cause irritation.
-
3
Wash the silicon container thoroughly per lab protocol, and place it in a drying rack.
-
4
Store any unused silicon in a tightly-sealed container, and place the container in a cool, well-ventilated area.
