How to Stop PCB Pollution

PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, have been banned chemical substances since 1976, but because they leached so thoroughly into our ecosystem, you can still find them in the water, air, land and organisms --- including people. They were primarily found in coolants for electrical devices, and were popular because of their flame-retardant capacities. However, they also wreaked havoc on the environment. Today, though, there are ways to minimize your personal exposure to PCBs in the world around you.

Instructions

    • 1

Order lean cuts of meat when you go to the butcher, and purchase organics when available. Stay away from Atlantic or farmed salmon, croaker, blackback, summer and winter flounder, striped bass and blue crab when buying fish to eat, as they tend to collect a lot of PCBs from the water in which they swim.

    • 2

Trim off any fat that you can see from meat and fish. Grill, bake or broil the meat or fish to leach the fat out, as PCBs tend to collect in the fatty parts.

    • 3

Cut back on dairy fat in your diet by choosing skim milk and low- or non-fat yogurts. Don't cook your meat or other dishes in butter, lard or bacon grease.
