A List of Landfills in Spartanburg County, South Carolina
Based on information provided by Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection, Zero Waste America (ZWA) estimated in a 1998 report that a mere 20 percent of all waste is considered municipal, and able to be deposited into municipal landfills. The other 80 percent includes a combination of hazardous, industrial and infectious wastes that are disposed in nonmunicipal, private facilities.South Carolina authorities successfully implemented an award-winning recycling program in 1991 aimed at reducing government municipal waste by 30 percent before 1997.

Spartanburg County's Solid Waste Department owns and operates one landfill. The Spartanburg County Wellford Landfill is located at 595 Little Mountain Road, Wellford, South Carolina.
In addition to the Spartanburg County Wellford Landfill, the Solid Waste department also operates 17 recycling/collection centers and two drop-off recycling centers. These recycling/collection centers allow disposal of household waste as well as recycling of items. Two additional locations, "Fast Phils" and "Alba Court," only accept recyclables.

Also located in Wellford, South Carolina, Palmetto Landfill is a privately owned landfill located at 360 New Hope Drive in Wellford. The Palmetto Landfill is operated by Waste Management Inc.

The Wellford Landfill's hours are from 7 a.m. til 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday; Recycling/Collection Centers hours are from 7 a.m. til 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Spartanburg county charges fees to accept waste materials. These fees took effect July 1, 2007, and are accurate as of publication. Municipal solid waste (MSW), described as general household and business refuse, is charged $33 per ton. Lead-based material is charged $37 per ton. Construction and demolition debris (C&D), such as lumber, bricks, leaves, grass clippings and stumps, is charged $25 per ton. Yard waste debris, such as clean brush, sticks and logs 6 feet in length or less, is charged $15 per ton. Electronic recycling, such as computers, fax machines and copiers, is charged at $500 per ton. Cardboard disposal has a surcharge of $66 per ton.
Mixed loads, such as MSW loads containing C&D materials, are charged a $37 per ton surcharge. And there is a special handling surcharge of $100 for loads requiring assistance or removal by Spartanburg County personnel. Standard passenger tires disposal fees is $1.50 per tire or $150 per ton. For oversized tires, the charge is $3.50 per tire. There is a $5 fee (per load) for mulch loading.
