The Best Rainwater Tanks
Commercial and household use of rainwater is becoming more common as water prices increase due to global water scarcity. Storage is an important part of rainwater harvesting, and there are several rainwater tanks available. Each rainwater tank has its advantages and disadvantages and choosing the best tank depends on factors such as climate, location, available space and purpose for the rainwater.-
Polyethylene Tanks

Polyethylene tanks are commonly used for rainwater storage, as they are less costly compared to other tanks. They are light and hence easy to relocate if necessary. They are also UV resistant and do not suffer corrosion, making them a popular choice for areas with heavy sunlight. They are not flame retardant however, and may not be recommended for areas prone to forest fires. Also, the effect of long-term storage on drinking water quality is questionable.
Fiberglass Tanks

Although more expensive, fiberglass tanks are also common. Like polyethylene tanks they are corrosion resistant and capable of withstanding high temperatures. As more light penetrates fiberglass than other tanks, there is an increased risk of algae growth. This is combated by painting the tank. Due to the brittle nature of fiberglass they are also more prone to cracking.
Metal Tanks

Metal tanks have been used the longest for rainwater storage. They generally have a long life span and are able to withstand extremities of hot and cold temperatures. There are different types of tanks using various metals such as copper, aluminum and galvanized steel. Metal tanks are susceptible to corrosion however, but zinc is often used to slow its onset.
Concrete Tanks

Concrete tanks keep water cooler than other tanks. They are a common choice for underground storage, as they can be designed to cover a large area, and above-ground concrete tanks are susceptible to algae growth. These tanks usually require a liner, as concrete is porous. Concrete tanks are prone to cracking after time; and, although easy to repair, it requires draining the entire tank.
